An unforgettable tale about memory, identity and cultural history from world-famous theatre visionary, Robert Lepage. Starting from his boyhood in divided, 1960s Quebec, 887 ricochets across decades with cinematic flair and stunning images. At once a mesmerizing memoir and a fascinating, contemporary history lesson told through awesome stagecraft, 887 features Lepage himself onstage for the first time in Hong Kong.
An evocative memory palace by one of today’s greatest theatre-makers
"Touching, intimate, powerful" ★★★★★ The Guardian
“Moving, disarmingly funny and, yes, unforgettable” ★★★★½ The Sydney Morning Herald
Why do we remember our first phone number but the name of a loved one escapes us? What do we remember? How and why?
Taking its title from his childhood address at 887 Murray Avenue in a 1960s Quebec City riven with tensions between French and English speaking communities, Robert Lepage’s solo autofiction is an unforgettable, multi-layered tale about memory, identity and cultural history. A fabulous, rotating set becomes a miniature model of his apartment block and neighbourhood; this magical stagecraft is more than an amazing box of tricks.
A worldwide hit since its premiere, this beguiling memoir provokes a sense of awe. Personal and contemporary social history has never seemed so fascinating and alive.
Previous Lepage productions (Bluebeard’s Castle, Erwartung) have brought some of the Festival’s most memorable theatre experiences of recent years. Now, one of today's greatest theatre-makers and intimate story-tellers himself appears on stage in Hong Kong for the first time.
