Introduction

Some people study calligraphy for more than a decade but still can't produce a decent piece. However, there are others who, in just three years, have gradually developed their calligraphy skills, achieving good results in exhibitions and competitions. The reasons for success or failure in learning calligraphy boil down to three factors: first, the skill level of the teacher; second, whether the proper methods of learning have been chosen; and third, whether the teacher can implement effective teaching methods. Teacher Ma, who has practiced calligraphy for 50 years and has been teaching for 20 years, began with the calligraphy of the Jin dynasty and selected masterpieces from various dynasties for students to copy and study in-depth. In addition to understanding character formation, they also learn complete composition. In class, larger works are copied to prepare for future exhibitions. After class, students are given homework to practice at home, and in the next session, collective corrections and peer reviews are conducted. The teaching practices over the past twenty years have demonstrated that students effectively master calligraphy, achieving remarkable results. Teacher Ma Runxian (alias Laoji) currently holds the following positions: 1. Member of the China Calligraphers Association; 2. Vice President of the Hong Kong Branch of the China Calligraphers Association; 3. Vice President of the Jiazi Calligraphy Society; and 4. Calligraphy lecturer at the University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE)
