Challenges of the Pandemic
Vic admitted that the pandemic had put a halt to his coaching career. He shared, “Since the onset of the pandemic, all swimming pools were closed and only reopened for a little more than one month before last winter. Regardless of industry, we were all hugely affected, and it had been a tough year for me.” The pandemic had posed a major challenge for all sectors and Vic was forced to live on his savings and deal with the mounting pressure of covering rent and daily expenses. When asked if he had considered moving back to Taiwan, he confessed, “Of course I did! I even cut up my credit cards because I felt that I got no future in Hong Kong and no income.” The sad truth about being away from home is that the situation can make anyone feel lonely and helpless.
Swimming was his passion and gave him fond memories, and his passion and persistence had persuaded him to remain in Hong Kong.
Determination in the Face of Hardship
Even though Vic thought about quitting and returning to Taiwan, he knew that swimming was his passion and gave him fond memories, and his passion and persistence had persuaded him to remain in Hong Kong. “I thought about a career change and becoming a part-time coach, but I was really hoping that the pandemic would slow down because it was such a pity that certain sports had become totally inaccessible.” As the pandemic began to ease and swimming pools started to reopen, Vic has now gone back to coaching his students and enjoying the fun of teaching, all because he made the bold choice of staying in Hong Kong.
